The Origins of Napcheong

Napcheong is a Bangjja Yugi atelier

founded in 1957 by Lee Bong-ju,

Honorary Holder of Korea's national Intangible Cultural Heritage, Bangjja Yugi Craftsmanship.

The atelier takes its name from the village

where he was born and raised.

Once home to many Bangjja Yugi ateliers,

its name remains woven into the techniques and traditions that continue through Napcheong today.

Yugi Through Changing Times

As time changed, so did the role of Yugi.

From household vessels such as basins

and chamber pots to traditional percussion instruments and tableware,

Napcheong has carried forward the many uses of Bangjja Yugi.

As living environments and dining culture changed, the place of Yugi in everyday life shifted,

while traditional production conditions became increasingly difficult. Yet despite these changes, Napcheong never ceased its craft.

By producing traditional instruments, the atelier preserved its techniques while continuing to develop the making of

 household vessels and tableware.

The Journey of the Atelier

Over the years,

Napcheong moved through Seoul and Anyang,

eventually taking root in its current locations in Gonjiam and Mungyeong.

As production environments evolved,

the atelier continued to explore new equipment and methods of making.

Today, traditional craftsmanship and contemporary working environments continue coexist

within the atelier.

Generations of Artisans

Bangjja Yugi cannot be made by

the hands of a single person.

The long process of heating, hammering, and shaping metal is made possible through

the hands, skills, and experience accumulated within the atelier over generations.

The craftsmanship passed down by Lee Bong-ju continues through his son, Lee Hyung-geun, Holder of Korea’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage,

Bangjja Yugi Craftsmanship,

and his grandson, Apprentice Lee Jiho.
