광복 80주년을 맞아 미국 워싱턴 D.C. 주미대한제국공사관에서 열린 《한국적 환대의 아름다움 The Beauty of Korean Hospitality》는 한국 전통 공예에 담긴 환대의 문화와 미학을 조명하는 특별전입니다.

과거 한국의 전통사회에서 손님을 맞이하는 일은 단순한 접대가 아닌, 정성과 예(禮)를 나누는 중요한 문화적 행위였습니다. 이번 전시는 방짜유기, 금박, 침선, 청동 공예 등 다양한 국가무형유산 공예품을 통해 한국적 환대가 지닌 품격과 아름다움을 현대적으로 풀어냅니다.

특히 고종이 자강외교를 모색했던 역사적 공간인 주미대한제국공사관에서 개최되어, 한국 전통문화의 정신과 역사적 의미를 함께 전달합니다. 조각장 곽홍찬, 각자장 김각한, 금박장 김기호, 염장 조대용, 침선장 구혜자 등 대한민국을 대표하는 장인 23인이 참여하였으며, 총 146점의 전통 공예 작품이 소개됩니다.

납청유기의 방짜유기 작품 또한 이번 전시에 함께하며, 손님을 위한 상차림과 일상 속 기물에 담긴 한국적 환대의 태도를 선보입니다. 오랜 시간 축적된 손의 기술과 공예의 정신은 단순한 물성을 넘어, 사람을 대하는 마음과 공간의 분위기까지 함께 전합니다.

Presented to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, The Beauty of Korean Hospitality explored the culture and aesthetics of hospitality embedded within traditional Korean craftsmanship.

Featuring works by 23 masters of Korea’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage, the exhibition showcased 146 craft objects across disciplines including Bangjja Yugi, gold leaf decoration, embroidery, bronze craft, and bamboo weaving. Through these works, the exhibition highlighted how hospitality in Korean culture has long been expressed through craftsmanship, ritual, and everyday objects rooted in sincerity and respect.

Held at the historic Old Korean Legation Museum in Washington, D.C., the exhibition connected Korea’s cultural heritage with the diplomatic and historical legacy of the site.

Napcheong Yugi participated with works that reflected the role of Bangjja Yugi in traditional dining and hospitality. Shaped through generations of craftsmanship, the pieces embodied not only material excellence but also the spirit of care, respect, and welcome at the heart of Korean culture.
