처마 아래 창방 기둥과 기둥의 위를 가로지르는 굵은 나무에 그려진 연꽃, 천장을 가득 채운 봉황과 구름, 창 위의 한가운데에서 금빛으로 반짝이는 오얏꽃…

조선시대의 궁을 화려하게 장식한 여러 무늬는 왕의 권위와 위엄을 상징하면서 기복祈福 복을빎, 벽사辟邪 귀신을 물리침 등의 의미를 지닙니다. 반복되는 무늬에 담은 우리 조상들의 원願은 그때보다 많은 것이 발전한 지금 우리의 바람과 크게 다르지 않습니다.

우리나라 근현대사를 간직한 덕수궁의 덕홍전 안에 작은 집을 지었습니다. 외벽은 덕홍전에서 볼 수 있는 전통 무늬와 단청을 활용한 각양각색의 패턴으로 장식했습니다. 안에는 전통 무늬를 담아 아름답게 지은 전승공예품을 전시했습니다. 함녕전 행각에는 전승공예의 맥을 잇는 이수자들의 작품을 선보입니다. 지금의 미감으로 재해석한 전통 무늬와 전승공예품이 어우러진 ‘희원의 공간’입니다. 덕홍전과 함녕전 행각, 그리고 덕수궁 곳곳을 살피며 몇백 년을 이어 온 우리 궁중 문화의 정수를 즐기시길 바랍니다. 각자의 크고 작은 바람을 조용히 꺼내어 희원하는 시간을 갖길 바랍니다.

Heewon: Wishes Embodied in Patterns

Deokhongjeon Hall and Hamnyeongjeon Gallery, Deoksugung Palace

As part of the 2022 Exhibition of National Intangible Cultural Heritage Apprentices, Heewon explored traditional Korean patterns as symbols of wishes, protection, and prosperity.

Inspired by the decorative motifs found throughout Deoksugung Palace, the exhibition brought together contemporary interpretations of traditional patterns and works of traditional craftsmanship. Through these objects, the exhibition invited visitors to reflect on the hopes and aspirations embedded in Korean cultural heritage.

Set within the historic spaces of Deokhongjeon Hall and Hamnyeongjeon Gallery, Heewon connected traditional craft, architecture, and contemporary sensibilities.
